Processing Methods

Quality Assessment for Grey Literature Studies (Our search and selection strategy included assessing the quality of gray literature studies, which further facilitated selecting only the ones with high enough quality. In total, we selected 16 quality assessment criteria, which are a subset of the criteria proposed by Kitchenham et al. for qualitative studies combined with a subset of the criteria proposed by Garousi et al. for GL. As an outcome of the evaluation, we calculated a quality score ranging in possible values between 0 for not fulfilling any quality criterion and 16 for fulfilling all of them. This score was used as a tie-breaker in the deduplication process and as a means to evaluate the general quality of the considered GL studies. Furthermore, to answer the question of how to use the quality assessment criteria to facilitate the selection process, we opted to consider only a subset of the criteria that represented must-have properties of high quality GL studies in the domain of computer science. Specifically, we considered four of the sixteen criteria, which assert that (i) the approach is clearly described, (ii) has a clear goal, (iii) has a publicly available code repository that verifies its validity, and (iv) the code repository is being actively maintained. The outcome of considering this subset was the inclusion score (values 0-4), which had to reach the maximum value, i.e. four, in order for the corresponding GL study to be considered as having sufficient quality.
